How They Lived: Middle-Class Life, 1870-1917 Using chapter 3 of Discovering the American Past: A Look at the Evidence. Volume II: Since 1865 (attached) as sources, look at the central question of what were Americans’ hope and fears during this era (1870-1917)? What were their values? The advertisements of this time reflect two general themes: aspiration and fear. Write 2 paragraphs (one for hope/aspire and one for fear) depicting how each theme was portrayed. Use examples from the texts and describe how each of the advertisements depicted the hopes and fears of the Americans of that time period. Make sure that you include which sources identify with these themes. There isn’t a right or wrong answer for this; simply describe what advertisements make people wish for something more or scare them into buying a product.
