Self-Concept

Description

COMM 108: Foundations of Human Communication Assignment: Self-Concept Paper Objective: The purpose of this assignment is to evaluate your self-concept by examining your interactions and everyday life experiences. Drawing from readings and class discussions of chapters one and two, discuss how your sense of “self” arises in communication with others. Directions: Review chapters one and two of your text. You might also review your class notes. Then, respond to only one of the questions below: Describe your self-concept—include examples of reflect appraisals, social comparisons and self perception. For example, what were some of the reflected appraisals you received growing up either as a child or a teenager? In what ways have those messages impacted your self-concept? Provide examples. Discuss at least one time in which you had a discrepancy or tension between two of the three selves described by self-discrepancy theory (the actual, ideal, and ought selves). What effect did this discrepancy have on your self-concept and/or self-esteem? Discuss some of the ways socializing forces (family, culture or media) influence your self-concept? Consider the “cultural iceberg” example to help you unpack this question. How can improving your self-concept, self-esteem, and perception improve your overall communication? Requirements: At least three pages (not to exceed four pages) of written content. Please use APA citation format and include a cover page. The cover page does not count towards the overall page count. Typed, and double-spaced with 1 inch margins on all sides. Submit the assignment to Blackboard by the due date. Late work will not be accepted. Point Value: 100 points Helpful Hints: When I read your paper, I will be thinking about the following questions: Do you thoughtfully use at least three concepts from the text and/or class discussion? Are you able to look at yourself carefully and critically? Are your examples specific? Do you discuss the verbal and nonverbal cues that lead you to your conclusions? Can you see both your strengths and weaknesses? Do you take the time to think about yourself from multiple viewpoints? Often when people are “stuck” they only allow themselves to see themselves or “the problem” from one point of view. Can you pull this all together to move yourself to a better understanding of yourself? Do you exercise proper spelling, punctuation, and grammar?
