Description
Paper One There are three time periods being covered in this class: Colonial to 1700, Eighteenth Century (1701-1800), and Early Nineteenth Century (1801 – 1865). Pick one of the three time periods Steps: Pick any author who is in this anthology but Not: Emerson (he is on the exam) Douglass (he is part of the Exam) Benjamin Franklin Edgar Allan Poe (you probably read him in high school) Emily Dickinson (you probably read her in high school) Take the works in the anthology (you can go outside of the anthology if you want to find more works by the author) discuss his or her place in social (which would include religion), political, and cultural time in history and demonstrate how that author is a part of that time period. Think about: * the audience * the purpose * the artistic style * the background of the area the author is from * the community in which he or she lives * his or her place in the community * the religion the community practices Give me the WHOLE picture. Remember that the literature that you chose is what you should be focusing on. You MUST use quotes from the author’s writings. This is NOT simply a biography of the author. By the way, this should be sent as one document. DO NOT SEND THE WORKS CITED PAGE SEPARATELY BECAUSE IT IS AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE PAPER! No “I,” “me,” “in my opinion,” or the like permitted in this paper – this is not about you; it is about the author 1) Typed, double-spaced, with no more than 1″ margins 2) Spell checked 3) All papers must be a minimum of 1250 words (the computer can check this and this does not include the Works Cited/Bibliography page, which will be the last page of the paper). If you cannot get 1250 words, then pick a different topic. 4) The first page of the paper should have the following information in the upper left corner: your name the date English 241 my name and the name of the assignment, Paper One or Paper Two. Do not have a title page. Should you want to title your paper, have it be right before you start the text of the paper. 5) Every following page must have your last name and the page number, preferably in the upper right hand corner, where it is easiest to read. 6) Use only a standard type (like this one, which is Georgia, or Arial or Times New Roman – Western) and a size 10, 11, or 12 font. 7) Failure to observe these guidelines can result in the lowering of the final grade or my not accepting the paper. 8) You must use the MLA format in writing this paper. This includes everything from the title to the Works Cited page. A Writer’s Reference or any reference book that you may have used in an English 111 or 112 class contains all this information, and there are reference books in the library that will have it.
