Description
The purpose of this assignment is to examine the problems of how to maintain international law and order and, specifically, what role the United States should play in this effort. Your readings for this assignment – Teddy Roosevelt’s 1904 speech to Congress and the Covenant of the League of Nations – discuss these issues as they affected the first two decades of the 20th Century. For your essay, you must discuss Teddy Roosevelt’s critique of the international order (that is, what problems does he identify) and what solution he proposes to resolve those problems. You must also describe the ways in which the League of Nations seeks to maintain international order, and provide your own views about whether the League of Nations resolves the problems that Roosevelt identified in his speech (that is, would Roosevelt be happy with the League and how it operates?).
