1) What is meant by life course framework as it relates to the study of aging? Define and describe it in three to five sentences.

2) Social gerontologists study aging through age norms, transitions, and countertransitions. Define them and describe how they are used in the study of aging.

3) What are age, period and cohort effects? Define and describe them in three to five sentences.

4) Of all the theories you learned about in chapter 3, list two and discuss how they explain aging. Pick one micro, and macro level theory. In two to three sentences each, describe how the theory explains aging. (What does it focus on? How does it define aging?)

5) Describe how social gerontology came into existence. Discuss its origins in three sentences.

6) If you have the sixth edition of the textbook, examine Figure 4-4 in Chapter 4 (page 79), if you have the seventh edition, see Figure 4-3 on page 76, and read the section on “The Changing Age Structure.” In your own words describe population trends in the U.S. to answer the following questions: How has the population changed since 1900? What is the anticipated growth of the elder population in 2040? In light of issues related to aging, what do you think this means and how will it affect people in the U.S.?

7) What type of welfare programs are available to the elderly in America? List them in three to five sentences.

8) In your own words, describe how long-term care of the elderly is financed in the U.S.? This answer should be three to five sentences long.
