Case Studies—Film Analysis
Purpose: To evaluate students’ ability to apply knowledge and concepts of fantasy to visual texts outside course readings.
Assignment: Each student will
Write an essay justifying that movie as a fantasy, sort of a fantasy, not a fantasy:
a. Explain how it fulfills the fantasy form
b. Discuss the fantasy hero/heroine/anti-hero/every person
c. Discuss the movie’s creation and use of “magic”
d. Discuss other concepts within the literary form fantasy
e. Discuss its overall fantasy/non-fantasy nature
Criteria:
At least 4 pages of analysis
Summary does not count towards analysis, but relevant quotes do
Relevant comparisons of individual scenes to scenes from our texts are allowable
MLA format (see OWL at Purdue if necessary)
Cite sections by approximate runtime (. . . at about x:xx of the movie, Harry’s battle with Voldemort . . . )
Evaluation: The film analysis will be evaluated based on:
Adherence to the assignment,
Quality of analysis,
Quality of writing (up to 30% may be deducted).
