Whether this excites you or concerns you, there will be a time when you must give oral arguments or speeches—it’s inevitable. It can be as simple as discussing your profession to your child’s fifth grade class or passionately arguing for a policy change to the administrative team at your workplace. By analyzing effective speeches, you can learn how to formulate your own arguments. Use the tools and methods studied in this course and, ultimately, increase your rhetorical power. Review the available selections of the masterfully constructed “Great Speeches” in the University Library Resources. Select a Great Speech. Choose 1 that offers enough substance for you to complete the requirements of this assignment, keep in mind some are shorter than others. Compose 1050-word essay in which you do the following: In the introduction summarize your selected speech. Include the link to your selected speech in your summary. In the first body paragraph, discuss the speaker’s use of logos. Does he/she present effectively concrete proof of his/her claims? In the second body paragraph, discuss the speaker’s use of pathos. Does this usage motivate the audience to action? In the third body paragraph, discuss the speaker’s use of kairos in the speech. Did that use increase or decrease the effectiveness and how can we tell? Conclude by discussing the speaker’s ethos. What did it contribute to the effectiveness of the speech? Format your paper consistent with MLA guidelines. Your Works Cited page should create a correct end citation for the speech.
