THIS IS THE TOPIC—-> #1: Write a classification essay in which you support a thesis about college students’ drive for success. Categorize students you know either by the degree of their need to succeed or by the different ways in which they wish to succeed. Write a Division/Classification Essay (550 to 750 words) by choosing from one of the writing topics below to either classify or divide it into its proper categories. Whenever possible, use your own labels and terms for your categories. The process of explaining what the label means and how it applies is an effective way of adding extra explanation or analysis to each paragraph. This also helps personalize the divisions and moves them away from just re-presenting the same old generic divisions that everyone already knows. If, for some reason, you feel the need to use the standard labels or divisions, make sure that you are re-defining or explaining them and not just telling us information that we already know.   Develop a thesis statement that will guide the reader throughout the essay. The thesis should help the reader understand the point of the essay (informing, persuading, or explaining a process) as well as enable the reader to understand the reasoning behind your classifications or divisions. As you develop your essay, you should elaborate on the classified/divided areas by using the “Show don’t tell” concept. In other words, after you delineate a category, make the category come alive; create an image/concept of that category so that your reader can see it in his/her mind’s eye. AVOID THE USE OF 2nd PERSON IN YOUR ESSAY.   To produce an acceptable classification/division essay, the writer should: — use grammatically appropriate sentence structures — Organize the essay according to the categories used to classify/divide the subject — Use appropriate paragraph breaks to control the flow of information — Use transitions both within and between the paragraphs — Develop and explain the essay content completely — Communicate a clear and specific purpose to an audience
