Brief of U.S. Supreme Court Criminal Case Opinion.   As part of the course, we studied the significance of appellate court precedent in the criminal law, which becomes a binding interpretation of our laws and Constitution.  In interpreting the rights of criminal defendants and U.S. Constitution’s due process requirements imposed on both the federal and state governments, the U.S. Supreme Court is truly “supreme” and final authority.  Its interpretations of Constitutional rights bind all federal and state courts.     During the course we have studied many of these Supreme Court rulings impacting criminal law and procedure.   Pages 421-22 of the text includes a case index, which may help you find a case mentioned in course materials that interested you.  (Note:  cases captioned as “State v. X” are not U.S. Supreme Court opinions but are opinions by state court.  State court opinions are NOT applicable to this assignment.).  Your assignment is to select ONE U.S. Supreme Court criminal law opinion and outline its contents in accordance with the prescribed rubric, below (a copy of that rubric is also attached here CASE OPINION SUMMARY RUBRIC.docx. This will require you to locate a copy of the opinion you choose using internet On the Web,  you can obtain copies of every published U.S. Supreme Court opinion, including recording of available oral arguments from various sources, including The Supreme Court’s Website (Links to an external site.) and academic websites, such as https://www.oyez.org You should be aware that the Supreme Court handles both civil and criminal cases involving interpretation of federal law and the Constitution.  Please ensure that you select a criminal case for this assignment. If you have concerns, contact me and I will verify whether the case you have chosen meets the requirement.   One admonition in completing this assignment:  there are lots of resources on the Web and elsewhere that review and summarize Supreme Court opinions.  That includes introductory summaries (called “syllabus”) prepared by editors.  Make sure you base your assignment on the actual opinions authored by the Justices (often headed with and identifying “opinion of the court” heading to distinguish it from editorial additions).  and make sure you summarize the case and relevant in your own words, unless properly quoting or attributing the source.  “STAY AWAY FROM PLAGIARISM”.      https://www.supremecourt.gov/   https://www.oyez.org      Note; Avoid PLAGIARISM and copying and pasting you will get you ZERO.
