Description
Choose a television commercial, found on YouTube, for your analysis. It must be at least 30 seconds long and advertise a nationally recognized product. Please include the link at the top of your analysis and submit your title and link for review via email. Minimum of four pages . Part I – On the first two pages, you will create a table; the first column identifies each individual code or symbol (roughly 100 if in list form), and the adjacent column will be a complete list of the complimentary connotations and significations. (Break down each symbol, ranging from visible agent demographics to nonverbal acts to all words used in each scene). Your goal in the second two pages is the development of an argument for deeper or latent systems of meaning as discovered in the relationship of signs and codes. Why did the agents do what they did and how did the artifacts communicate a larger message to the intended audience? You should place the signs and codes in the context of the time (historical era) in which the commercial airs. Ask why these codes and signs are persuasive in this historical context. Part II – On the third and fourth pages of the report you will introduce your commercial, analyze, and synthesize how all of the signs and codes were used in the scenes in paragraph form. This should not be a play-by-play. Think about what the tenor (subject or theme) is and Connect Maslow’s Needs, Rank’s Model, Marketing Strategies, Burke’s Pentad, Evidence, Liking, Language Dimensions, and Nonverbal concepts, wherever applicable. Can you relate this sign system to a larger archetypal sign system, myth, or story? Incorporate Larson’s Cultural Narratives in your analysis, if applicable. Cite specific information from Part I as evidence to build an argument for a specific meaning. Samples will be provided.
