Critical Review and Analysis:

Note: A critical review is the summarization and evaluation of the ideas and information in an article. It expresses the writer’s ie, your point of view in the light of what you already know on the subject from the class and what you acquire from related texts. Reviewing critically means thinking carefully and clearly and taking into consideration both the strengths and

weaknesses in the material under review. Analysis means to break something down and study the parts, in this case a research text, and evaluate the text as per the following suggestions.

This review requires you to find a current (2010-2020) scientific research article from a reputable peer-reviewed Journal (see suggested list below) that relates to evolution and/or topics covered in this course. You will summarize this article and critique it, comparing and contrasting it to discussions in the text or the lectures. The maximum length of the critical analysis is 5 pages, typed (+2 others, 12 pt. font, double or 1.5 spacing to meet page requirements). The paper should include a photocopy of the first page of the article with the abstract and/or the first 200 words. The review will include:

Cover page: your name – course name and the complete reference of the article, any other additional supportive references

used, as well as a notation of the pages from the text that relate to the article. If online access, give address as well as complete original reference.

Page 1 – Top line: your name and a short, article reference (eg, Nature 2003; 68:172-179.)

Summarize the major issues in the paper and give a statement of your thesis about the paper based on your analysis.
The summary (the abstract is usually the authors’ summary) should be in your own words and you may also comment
on the research methods (if applicable).

Pages 2 – 4: Connect article to the course. Compare and contrast course content with the article; does it support, disagree, or
extend the relevant points, issue, or discussion? Try to explore at least three ideas underpinning your thesis statement.

Page 5: State your own opinions about this article and its value for your learning process.

Final Page: Copy of the chosen article’s original 1st page with abstract (i.e., total 7 pages).
