Educational Synthesis

Description

Although we will have class time for reading and writing, the assignment will require reading and note- taking outside of class. You are writing an argumentative, synthesis paper. That means that you are proposing your position and defending it by pulling in many different resources. A synthesis paper is best when the sources from which you cite are in support of your ideas (showing that someone else agrees with your ideas or showing what helped shape your ideas); it is not a look at each individual source and a breakdown of what was in that article. The best supported ideas have more than one source that supports them instead of a single source only. What you argue and how you approach this paper will be determined based on the prompts located in chapter five of our online textbook, pp. 296-297; choose from prompts: **when sources required are listed, that means from the textbook, you may, of course, add additional research sources Whichever prompt you choose, you should read at least four of the following ten sources in order to have a base from which to choose. In most cases of standard research, you usually only discover one usable quote for about every three sources you read. You must cite from three of different sources minimum. Ralph Waldo Emerson is a required source for all prompts. You are not answering any of the questions at the end of the readings for an assignment although they may help you formulate your ideas. **”from Education” (Emerson 102), from first edition of the textbook, this edition cuts speech short) – Will have video lessons to help you with this reading as it is difficult. “The Blessings of Liberty and Education” (Douglass 193) [Do not use the “from Not for Profit” excerpt as a required source.] ”Talk To Teachers” (Baldwin 211) “Walking the Path between Worlds” (Alvord 218) “I Know Why the Caged Bird Cannot Read” (Prose 223) “Me Talk Pretty One Day” (Sedaris 236) “Why Virtual Classes Can Be Better Than Real Ones” (Oakley 240) “My Friend, the Former Muslim Extremist” (Kristof 246) “What Is Education For?” (Allen 249) “Have We Lost Sight of the Promise of Public Schools?” (Hannah-Jones 259) Have We Lost Sight of the Promise of Public Schools?” (Hannah-Jones 259) “from Report of Massachusetts’ Board of Education” (Mann 271) “Let Teens Try Adulthood” (Botstein 273) “Why We Desperately Need to Bring Back Vocational Training in Schools” (Wyman 277) “from What America Can Learn from Smart Schools in Other Countries” (Ripley 279) “How High Schools Are Demolishing the Classroom” (Nguyen-Okwu 282) “from We Will Pay High School Students to Go to School. And We Will Like It” (Mock 284) “This High School Wants to Revolutionize Learning with Technology” (Rolph 286) **”School” (Mori 130) Attached and from the first edition of the textbook, but I think it is helpful for some of the prompts. ***Cite the articles as though they came from the textbook. Emerson comes from the first edition textbook. You might notice how the titles are written here. In a synthesis paper, the goal is not to explore each of your source materials, but to put forth your own ideas with the information. A good synthesis point in support of your thesis will have a few paragraphs and more than one source supporting that idea. Again, your focus in a synthesis essay is on YOUR ideas, not the ideas of the article or articles used. Thesis Statements tell your reader what are you going to prove and how are you going to prove it. (for the one source could you please use these links?
