Students will identify and research one (1) community-based organization within their chosen community.
Research should include:
Demographic information: name, location, # of employees, services provided, population served, leadership structure, time in existence, operating budget, funding sources, mission/purpose of organization, effectiveness of organization (i.e. has the organization been successful in doing what it has set out to do? How do you know?), collaborations/partnerships with other community organizations (i.e. schools, hospitals, libraries, government…).
Interview (when possible): Students will identify a member of the organization to interview to learn more about how the organization meets the needs of the community. Interview question(s) will be developed in class.
Students will post research of their CBO
re and the overall assessment of this CBO as it relates to family/community engagement. MUST gather: photos of the CBO, bulletins, brochures, schedules AND rubric (see end of syllabus)
Students will include interview questions and responses
Think that you are providing a “snapshot” of the CBO to a person who is not familiar with the community or the organization.

Part 4 , so is two parts.
o Name of your community
o Basic demographic information of the community (ie; location, size, racial/ethnic composition, socioeconomic status…)
o Three (3) unique features of this community (think of things that really stood out to you, surprised or shocked you about this community)
o Information regarding two (2) educational institutions (names, type of institution, demographic info, unique features…)
o Information regarding two (2) CBOs (names, type of organization, demographic info, unique features…)
o Artifacts to support the above information
ü Final Submission: To be handed in at the start of the Community Study Fair.
o Three (3) page (no more than 3 pages), typed and double-spaced synopsis of your research. Synopsis MUST include:
Ø Your overall assessment of the community’s, educational institutions’, and CBOs’ ability to support and engage with children and families (1 page)
Ø 1-3 things you learned while doing this research (can be related to the actual research process or the actual community, educational institutions and/or CBOs) (1 page)
Ø 1-3 things I would do differently to further support family and community engagement within this community. Provide concrete examples/strategies) and Why? -in what ways are these strategies helpful? (1 page)
