CASE STUDY

Description

Stefan is an 81-year-old Indigenous man in Toronto, and until recently was living with his son, who was paying most of their rent. The son and his new girlfriend recently moved out of the apartment, and Stefan cannot pay the rent himself as he only gets about $1000 a month in Old Age Security (OAS/GIS). He takes reasonably good care of himself, and he is in good health except for being partially blind. He has recently started to drink heavily and has been seen having conversations with himself.  His neighbours have raised their concerns to the landlord.   Here are some questions to answer based on this case study: Using one specific theoretical lens learned in this class, what are the key themes you can identify in this case? (3 marks)   Explain two harm reduction approaches you could use to support an Indigenous elder like Stefan.  Why would you choose these approaches for Stefan? (2 marks)   What are three fears or biases that you have in relation to working with people in mental crisis and how might you address these fears or biases before and during your work in the field? (3 marks)   Please locate two social service agencies in your area that could support Stefan.  What services could they offer him that would meet his specific needs as an Indigenous man?  (2 marks) ALL THE REFERENCES MUST BE CANADIAN.
