big two hearted river

Description

Use 3rd person point-of-view. Make the essay about the story and the author’s strategies in composing it instead of about you.
Maintain a scholarly tone, avoiding colloquial language, inappropriate humor, etc. The essay shouldn’t sound casual and conversational but academic.
Structure: Begin with a formal introduction with an explicit thesis statement; the body of the essay should be subdivided into unified, coherent, and fully-developed paragraphs according to subtopic; end with a formal conclusion that reiterates the thesis using fresh language.
Give your essay a unique and personal title, not something generic and bland like “Thematic Analysis Assignment.” It doesn’t have to reveal your thesis, but it should give some indication of what the essay will be exploring.
Format: 12pt font that is easy on the eyes (Times New Roman, Courier, Calibri, etc.), double spaced, indented paragraphs, 3-6 pp. in length.

Hemingway’s View On War
Ernest Hemingway was a writer who drew his inspiration from the events stated in an interview that, “after the First World War, he had painful memories of which he wanted to rid himself by setting them all down,” that prevailed during his life during and following the First World War. He loved hunting, nature, and fishing in northern Michigan as an adventurist, directly related to the protagonist in “Big, Two-Hearted River.” As a perfect portrayal of himself, Nick Adams includes this character upon returning from the conflict. This essay accomplishes the critical analysis by examining the writing style employed to accentuate imagery and symbolism.

Within part one of the stories, the writing style used presents Hemingway as striving to keep the story simple by not involving so many words, yet every line in the piece conveys a specific meaning. Adopting short syntax laced with repetition throughout the story, the writer can highlight Nick’s critical issues together with his recovery. Appearing plausible from the outset, the reader can see the use of repetition in the entire tale to gain a clear picture of Nick and his emotional standing returning from the conflict. A typical example of this is evident with Nick moving closer to his backpack and gear. Here, Hemingway encases several words severally in a bid to create a vivid image for the audience. “He adjusted the pack harness around the bundle, pulling straps tight, slung the pack on his back, got his arms through the shoulder…” (Hemingway 164). Also, this is a perfect instance of symbolism. The backpack does not serve as gear but represents Nick’s mental turmoil that he conveys on his every expedition. Strapped on the back, the bag creates the impression that Nick requires someone to relieve him of this burden, which seems to overrun his life. In the same vein, Hemingway creates a mental illustration of the world’s mental insinuation, including depicting Seney’s town. The writer binds everything to concealed confounding manifestations.
A typical illustration occurs upon Nick first viewing the town and giving his description of it. The narrator provides a vivid image of Nick’s sight as soon as he disembarks from the train. “There was no town, nothing but the rails and the burned-over country. Mansion House hotel stuck up above the ground. (Hemingway, 163). Notably, what appears here was the general feeling after many fighters were coming back home only to be treated to unfamiliar sights that a lot had changed. Akin to Nick, they returned home with nothing, only harboring the feeling of loneliness, making it intricate for anyone to understand what they had endured in the wild. While depicting the town as gone, this story’s commencement is a deliberate action to convey the audience’s rhythm and tone to comprehend Nick’s psychological state quickly. He appears more of an alien in his space. The fact that the town is visible as one of the many symbols for Hemingway means that the writer attempts to appear as Nick witnessed in the war.
From the outset, the author employs nature in the guise of several symbols, the trout included. “Nick looked down into the clear, brown water, colored from the pebbly bottom, and watched the trout keeping themselves steady in the current with wavering fins” (Hemingway 163). Used here are the symbols of both the river and the trout to give the reader the impression of nature’s integrity in the river’s guise and its will as defined by the trout. The river serving as an illustration and an object that Nick can rely on accentuates that he was always there. From the beginning, the trout depicts Nick’s emotional state as he tries to combat the river’s currents. In a way, nick is performing the same thing to overcome the tribulations brought by war. Later in the story, the trout is confirmed to be concerning Nick as he confronts ensuing challenges.
In conclusion, in this story, Hemingway stamps authority in literature through a hidden yet straightforward ability to take on a bigger story. In this Big Two-Hearted River, Hemingway brings the reader into the story’s shape and feel, allowing them to understand Nick’s situation. The rich interplay of imagery and symbolism gives the story a profound meaning and depth. Creating a character who resembles what he witnessed during the first world war enables the reader to develop the passion of connecting with the story of a person fishing in northern Michigan.
