Research Critique Paper

The paper will critique an empirical study in terms of criteria to be specified in class. The student is expected to apply knowledge of research methodology in a critical evaluation of the article. The paper will be (a) between 5-7 typewritten pages, double-spaced, one-inch margins, and (b) proofread for correct grammar and spelling. Papers are required to follow APA format. The final study for the critique requires approval from the instructor.

The main purpose of this assignment is to demonstrate your knowledge of the necessary components of a quality piece of research. To do so, you will select a research article, preferably peer reviewed, on a topic of interest to you. Please make sure you have included the following components:

· Summarize the study, including its purpose and overall strengths and weaknesses

· Critique the methods used (reliability, validity, type of study, sampling technique, ethical considerations, quality of the measures used, etc.)

o You may need to reference other sources to demonstrate the quality of the measures used

· What were the outcomes of the study?

· Can they be applied to other populations?

· What are their implications for social work practice?

o You may want to reference other sources to support your suggested implications.

· What would you suggest the author do differently to improve the quality of the study.

In addition to minimum requirements specified above and content criteria to be discussed in class, papers will also be assessed based on the following:

(a) depth and quality of critical analytic skills (i.e., evaluative and analytic skills)

(b) demonstrated understanding of concepts and principles (i.e., application of concepts/principles in critical analyses)

The written assignment is to adhere to APA style of writing. Students are to follow the formatting style as described in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 6th edition. Written papers should follow the formatting and reference citations articulated in the APA manual. The key to an effective assignment is succinct, persuasive writing, rather than length for the sake of “getting everything in.”
