You have just been appointed principal of a new school. This school is consistently low performing and you are charged with turning the school around. The school has invested in a significant number of professional development workshops and coaching, but student achievement has not improved. The school has a comprehensive school improvement plan. As the principal, you must figure out where the problem lies. A recent state review indicated that there was inconsistent instructional practices, infrequent checking for understanding and poor student engagement along with many restless and misbehaving students in classrooms. There is a well-defined curriculum map and pacing guide that aligns with state standards. There is a very senior staff and most have been teaching 20+ years. The student population is changing with an increasing number of students living in poverty and recent immigrants. Very poor parent involvement exist. The school is a magnet school with a theme of integrating the Arts however; staff cuts have eliminated the district magnet coordinator that led many of the Arts initiatives. The proof of your success will be realized in improving the quality of instruction and improved test scores (i.e. reading, writing, or math and science) as requested by the Superintendent. Develop a plan of action for improvement?
