Description
Basic requirements
Collect samples of 3-4 academic texts (e. g. some parts of research articles, chapters in a
monograph or any other academic book, conference materials, etc.) in English and 3-4 academic
texts of the same (or similar) kind in your first language (or any other familiar language other
than English).
For each pair of texts in English and in another language, provide some comments on the differences and similarities between writing in English and in another language which you can notice in those particular samples. Please include in your comment the English translation (or explanation/description) of the examples from the texts in another language.
The comments may include some information about the differences and similarities observed in the:
organization of those texts;
the flow of information there;
the use of personal stories, anecdotes, proverbs, etc. vs. facts, statistics, and references to
others’ research (or vice versa);
some features of their language (e. g. presence or absence of 1stperson pronouns, the use of metaphors and set expressions, presence or absence of evaluative adjectives, etc.);
and/or any other peculiarities of writing associated with certain cultural traditions.
Note that these should be scholarly/workplace, professional, and non-literary genres. Try to avoid everyday homely genres such as thank-you notes or wedding invitations even though these may be very interesting to analyze and discuss.
Include a brief (about one single-spaced page) introduction to the whole portfolio that (1)introduces your samples, (2) provides a brief overview of those texts, and (3) reflects on what you have learned from these samples for your professional and writing purposes.
