Description
I need a high-score research paper. A Populist politician is one who purports to speak for the mass of people against the government in power or other existing authorities. Populism on both left and right often expresses a desire to be “saved from” as opposed to “saved by” the “experts”—saved from ‘experts’ such as governmental or cultural or media authorities (according to the right), or saved from ‘experts’ in high finance or mainstream-politics or corporate America (according to the left). The right wing populist movement that supported President Trump recoiled at the cultural influence of uncensored Hollywood films, at career workers in federal and state bureaucracies, at experts in academia including science departments; the left populists of the Bernie Sanders stripe targeted the supposed experts in corporate America and on Wall Street and those on the opinion pages of certain major American newspapers. As Fifth Risk makes clear, our author Michael Lewis greatly respects experts and expertise, and highlights deep subject matter knowledge and those who have it. But even he has written about how authorities—in high finance, in professional sports, in government regulatory institutions corrupted by the very businesses they were supposed to regulate—have gone off track, and let their self-interest compromise their missions. This topic invites you to investigate online expressions in social media of voices expressing ‘save us from’ the experts, evaluating the extent to which different voices are reality-based and trustworthy, or not, and craft a summary statement—in your thesis—of the dangers and/or virtues of the populist impulse to distrust expertise. The voices you should research should be representative of larger currents of thoughts, and/or of actual affinity groups or organizations, no matter how loosely organized.
