Therefore, they were expected to remain subservient to men to attain any level of satisfaction in life. After the Revolutionary War, women, who had raised children alone while their husbands served in the military, were viewed as the moral compass of the family and expected to guide men and children along the moral path. In the antebellum era women took on the responsibility of guiding their families and communities along a moral path and yet were not considered equals to men. Women proved over and over again they were capable and independent by serving in wars, keeping farms and businesses going while their husbands were serving in the military, and raising their children to be productive members of society who would one day lead the country. Despite this show of strength and fortitude, women were not granted the vote, the right to their own wages, or the ability to hold positions of power in the country. Women in all eras were expected to have children and were judged by how their family, especially the children and husband behaved. These expectations and their continued status of second-class citizens without a public voice is what led to the women’s rights movements in the 20th century.
