Description
Answer the following questions as clearly and thoroughly as possible. Use complete sentences and paragraphs. Be specific and use textual support (i.e. quotes from our course texts). (75 points each) In the novel Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte, how was Jane opposed to traditional patriarchal views regarding a woman’s rightful place and natural sensibilities (i.e. naturally fitting the confines of the domestic sphere: housekeeping, childbearing, and childrearing and ill-suited for anything more “intellectually rigorous” or “stimulating”)? In other words, was this novel the least “feminine” or most feminist? Explain your answer. Consider each young woman we have encountered. How is her identity, independence, and self-empowerment influenced by her mother or the mother figures in her life? Discuss at least two young women and their respective mothers/mother figures as you answer this question.
