Description
You must write an essay contrasting the Letter from Birmingham Jail as a sort of manifesto to statement of purpose for the civil rights movement with the Declaration of Independence, which served a similar role for the founding of the United States. In this paper, you must consider the ways in which the resultant Articles of Confederation and U.S. Constitution reflect the concerns raised in the Declaration of Independence and the ways in which the Civil Rights Act and Voting Rights Act both echo the concerns of the Letter from Birmingham Jail. Broadly you should be discussing the ways in which the American Revolution has contributed to the growth of Civil Rights over time and the ways in which the rhetoric of the founding has contributed to this discourse, even while the laws of these United States have often served as a brake on the expansion of Civil Rights. You should conclude with an analysis of whether or not the American Revolution and the expansion of Civil rights is going to continue. SOURCES REQUIRED: Letter from Birmingham Jail, Declaration of Independence, The Articles of Confederation, U.S. Constitution, Civil Rights Act, and the Voting Rights Act.
