Description
Final Feature (1,750-2,000 words): This trend feature story is your major outside writing project for this class. Remember you are writing journalistic feature stories NOT research papers. You need to know the difference. Your story should be written in the inverted pyramid format and they should read like feature stories you would read in the San Jose Mercury News. Final feature trend story: At least four people need to be interviewed for your final feature and direct quotes from them need to be included. Minimum word count is 1,750 words. Two scholarly journal articles need to be referenced in the feature story similar to the examples we discussed in class. Total word count: In addition, your total word count is due. Include all assignments and add the word count for each assignment. Interview source list: A list of interview sources including names, emails and contact phone numbers needs to be included with the final stories. Notes and considerations — Final Paper a.k.a. Feature/Trend Story): This is your major outside writing project for this class. You must successfully complete this assignment to pass. Here are some considerations for selecting a topic: Why does this trend interest you? Why is it worth writing about? Is this topic broad enough so that you can find ample information on it, but narrow enough to be manageable? What makes this story newsworthy? What is the hook or the news peg? What publication would be interested in it? Assess what you already know about this topic and possible resources: popular (newspapers/books/magazines/web), scholarly (academic journals), first person (interviews). What qualifies you to write on this topic? Can you tell this story in an interesting way? What makes your approach different? Point deductions — Each AP style mistakes is worth 5 percent on the final feature and sidebar. Factual errors are worth 30 percent point deduction. Late assignments will receive zero points. Failure to include two scholarly journal references is 15 percent point deduction for each journal you leave out.
