For the Final Project is to connect the topic of surveillance to your own interests,  experience, or independent research, focusing on one of the main themes of the course: (1) privacy, autonomy, and the experience of surveillance (2) institutional study & political-economy of surveillance / state vs private-sector surveillance privacy law  surveillance of activism and political dissent national security & state secrets credit reporting surveillance capitalism (3) surveillance and culture surveillance & cinema  surveillance & art There are 2 options for what you produce:  A written essay (1200 words, APA style) For both essays and presentations, adopt the following structure: I. Hook Begin with a “hook” or a “taste” of the longer story you’re going to tell. It should be just enough to capture interest (leave details for later). II. Context Provide some context, or connection to the course themes. Briefly gesture at the most relevant ideas, concepts, and questions from the course readings. Use your own words: no direct quotes. III. Elaboration Provide your own elaboration of the topic, based on your own experience or independent research. For example, Zuboff tells a story about the rise of surveillance capitalism as it transpired over the last 20 years. You were alive then–how did you experience it? Can you share a story from your own experience that enlivens or elaborates on her story? Or, you could choose to tell a story about a company as described in the “Surveillance Company Profile” option (see separate post).  IV. Conclude Offer the main take-aways, or raise the questions that remain.
