To be successful, students should examine 3-4 aspects of each regime, such as: role of the political party; the totalitarian nature of each regime; ideology; racial policy; foreign policy; agricultural policy; labor policy; role of the leader; role of women; police apparatus; use and practice of terror; militarism, censorship; and so on. (Clearly, if you select “labor policy,” you must compare the labor policy of Fascist Italy with the labor policy of National Socialist Germany.) Remember that history is the study of change over time: for example, the role of the National Socialist Party in 1933 might have been different by 1938 or 1941.

Your thesis paper must not exceed six (6) double-spaced pages with one-inch margins. Your Endnote page(s) will not be counted toward your six (6) pages of text. Moreover, you must NOT use any sources other than those that I provided. In other words, no internet sources (or for that matter any other sources) other than those I listed. In addition to the primary sources and the pages from Laqueur, you should read (but do not cite) your textbook.

**Since you will be using the sources I provided, we will not follow the Chicago Manual of Style for your footnotes (or endnotes). In your first citation of any given source, simply provide the author (if given), the complete title of the document, and the page number. Any reference to the same document thereafter should simply indicate the last name of the author, an abbreviated title, and page number.

Example:

1. Erich Kempka’s Eyewitness Description of “Operation Hummingbird” on June 30, 1934 (Retrospective Account, 1954), p. 1.

2. Kempka, Eyewitness Description, p. 2.
