IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS PLEASE ASK T HE Based on topic below, write a 2000 word paper (minimum 1800 words, maximum 2200 words). The paper should be double-spaced, in a standard 12-point font, with 1-inch margins. The purpose of this paper is to develop a clear and persuasive historical argument using the available class materials (lectures, assigned textbooks, online readings from Canvas). In addition to the major texts under discussion (Conrad, Thomson & Smith), each paper is required to cite at least four other written primary or secondary sources (from among those assigned or recommended for this class). TOPIC John Thomson and Adolphe Smith’s Street Life in London(1877) is presented as a work of documentary journalism, yet it is inevitably selective in its portrayal of London’s working classes. What is the book’s message or “argument” and why was this argument particularly relevant in Victorian Britain? Among issues you may want to consider (you don’t need to consider them all!): the book’s target audience; the book’s selection of subjects and stories; the authors’ apparent attitude toward their subjects; the role of photography in this project; the role of the vignettes, including their use of narrative and other literary devices; the authors’ attitudes toward social reform and social engagement on behalf of the poor and the unemployed; the possibility of a disconnect between the authors’ intent and the message actually conveyed by the book’s text and photographs; similarities and differences between Thomson & Smith and Marx & Engels; parallels between the Victorian “social question” and modern discussions of debt, underemployment, the “gig economy,” and worker precarity. You should relate your arguments to at least four of the assigned readings (primary or secondary) from the two Industrial Revolution modules and/or the Victorian England module (not including Street Life itself).
