Description
The Purpose of the Final Project One of the biggest barriers to getting help for psychological distress and disorders is stigma –negative attitudes associated with mental illness. Stigma can lead to years of unnecessary suffering, of feeling different, misunderstood, and alone. The purpose of this project is to lower the barrier of stigma by sharing accurate information about psychological disorders and effective treatments. You are learning a lot in this class! What perspectives on psychopathology could be shared with friends, family, co-workers, or the general public to help eliminate negative attitudes associated with mental illness? To “Stamp out Stigma” and to help promote a more just and equitable society, you will create an infographic using accurate information that can be shared with others. An infographic is a visual representation of information or data that gives an easy-to-understand overview of a topic. This assignment will help you develop skills consistent with the three goals of this class: Support Well-being Communicate the difference between scientific and popular notions of psychopathology. Think like a psychologist by using critical thinking to appreciate the complexity of psychopathology as it applies to “real world” behavior. The assignment will also increase your psychological knowledge of Evidence-based research on psychopathology. Stigma and misconceptions about mental illness Incidence and prevalence of different psychological disorders Advocacy and understanding for individuals with mental illness Task Your final project is a word document and infographic in which you will explore mental health stigma. To keep you on track, there are discussions assignments that will give you an opportunity to think, reflect, write, and receive feedback from your classmates about the questions you will answer for the final product. The questions you will answer for your discussion assignments are the same questions you will answer for the final project. The more high-quality your discussion, the more likely your project will be high-quality (and receive a better grade). Please note that just because your discussion receives full credit it does not mean your project will receive full credit in that area. Please review the rubric for each question and answer in a thoughtful and thorough manner. What You Need to Do Review the infographics listed below. Pick an infographic from the list to analyze. Pick a psychological disorder (or suicide) you would like to address in your own created infographic from one of the chapters we have covered or will cover in the book. Please submit the completed final project via Word document to iCollege by 11:59pm on the date assigned. If you are unable to copy and paste your own created infographic to the end of your Word doc, please include a separate attachment with a .pdf or .jpeg of the infographic. [These might be items to consider for later inclusion in your infographic.] Discuss one or more myths about diagnosis and treatment of this disorder. Describe the strength and resiliency seen in individuals diagnosed with the disorder you chose. Give a real-world example of how someone might use their experience with the disorder and treatment to help them be effective in their career. Be specific! Create an Infographic on Your Chosen Disorder Complete a minimum of 6 different areas of coverage, although more are welcomed and encouraged. See Final Project Resources (below) for suggestions on what to include on infographics. Include a real phone number or website for additional resources. If you are unaware of real resource to include, you may make one up (e.g., www.exampleresourcesforstigmareduction.com ; 1-800-123-4567). The inclusion of contact information is designed to give the infographic viewer an easy next step to receive more information, follow up with services, etc. Explain why you think your infographic can reduce stigma and promotes a more just and equitable society.
