Description
This oral presentation is one of the Signature Assignments for this class. This is meant to demonstrate your understanding of the class content as well as ability to communicate that concept in an oral presentation. As part of the Signature Assignment, you will be responsible for recording your presentation and uploading it. Instructions have been included in this folder. Overview You will record a 2-3 minute video of yourself giving a speech to the class. You will create a Public Service Announcement regarding an issue that affects public health. Your goal will be to educate the public on this issue and give information about how to make healthy choices and avoid health problems. You will choose to address any one type of public health issue that affects the population. These can include: infectious diseases, sexually transmitted diseases, heart disease, cancer, childhood diseases, vaccinations, healthy eating, reducing stress, or any other public health issue. After you choose your topic, review the Communication Event video on public health to remind yourself what the panelists said regarding communication about public health. Follow their advice as it relates to your topic to make the most effective PSA you can make. This PSA needs to be based on solid research. I want you to use two quality sources to support your ideas. You not only will use them to learn about this health issue and how to effectively deal with it, but you need to verbally cite it in the presentation. This will add to your credibility. You will need to research and go beyond what you know. There are going to be many resources out there on your subject. You can research this health issue using the UHD online databases. There are plenty of resources that will give you a lot of relevant information. You will also need to write a full-sentence outline for the speech. This outline will cover everything you plan to say. I’ve provided an example on Blackboard and the book has examples as well. You may submit a draft outline of the presentation so I can see if you’ve got the right topic and are going in the right direction. A draft is worth 50 extra credit daily points. In addition, submitting a draft will result in a better grade. To qualify for extra credit, the draft must be submitted a week before the video is due, if not earlier. Presentation Requirements You will prepare a presentation with at least two sources that don’t include the textbook or panel presentation. You will record and submit a 2-3 minute video to OneDrive You will post the link to the message board and submit it to the dropbox Full-sentence outline turned into Blackboard Grade based on content, verbal and nonverbal delivery, research, and organization. Assignment Breakdown Step One: Speech Topic You will choose an issue of public health and develop a 2-3 minute PSA on the subject. You will revisit the health communication discussion from the communication event. The outside research you use will help explain, justify, and support your statements regarding this issue. The outside research on the topic must go beyond the class textbook. There are many resources out there, and you will need at least two quality sources. (The Dictionary or a generic encyclopedia will not be considered a quality source.) This is what you will develop into a 2 – 3 minute speech Step Two: Draft Outline You may submit a draft outline of your presentation This should cover all the points you plan to include in the presentation You should incorporate as many of the outside sources as possible. The more you give me, the better my feedback This is worth 50 Extra Credit Daily Points Step Three: Full Sentence Outline You will create a full sentence outline that covers all the content you plan to include in the speech This will be a polished and refined version of the draft outline you submitted to me earlier This must follow the standard outline rules I’ve posted on Blackboard You will plan out the introduction, body, and conclusion. The more thorough you are in the outline the stronger the presentation. This is not something you want to just throw together in the last minute. Since the speech is 2-3 minutes long, a well-planned outline will help you keep the speech within that time limit. You need to cite your sources in the outline You need to include a Works Cited/Bibliography You will submit the outline to Blackboard the day the video upload is due Step Four: Practice Delivery I recommend you not deliver with your outline. Instead, use a 3×5 notecard. Create the notecard based on your outline, but don’t try to put every word there. Only include what’s absolutely needed for your presentation You will be graded on your delivery as well as content, so practice your speech using your notecard. Step Five: Record and Upload the Video You will need to record yourself giving the 2-3 minute speech. You can also have someone else record for you. Thus must be one continuous take. Don’t splice together multiple videos. I want to see a complete take from you. When you have finished recording, upload the video to OneDrive If you cannot get One Drive to work, you can also upload as an unlisted YouTube video. Make sure the video can be viewed by everyone. Post the link to the video in the message board Copy the link to a document and submit it to the dropbox Sources You will need two specific sources for this presentation that do not include the class textbook You must cite your sources in your presentation Your full-sentence outline must include a Works Cited page/Bibliography for all sources used
