Description

Background: Except for her sex, Hillary Clinton was a highly conventional presidential candidate. She had been in public life for decades, first as a First Lady, then a U.S. Senator, then as U.S. Secretary of State under President Barack Obama. Like most politicians, her rhetoric is polished and measured, and her political views often shifts to reflect the mainstream within the Democratic Party.  None of this makes her unique; it makes her a career politician. However, the public response to Hillary Clinton as the Democratic Presidential nominee in 2016 was anything but conventional. National polls consistently showed that 50 – 55% of white men without a college degree viewed Clinton as unfavorable; for comparison, only 30% of this group viewed Obama as unfavorable in 2012 (Beinart, 2016).  While the media has commented on her physical appearance since the 1990s, proponents on the far right were particularly nasty in 2016, calling Clinton ugly, fat, and a bitch (among other things). See the images below for a couple of examples: While Clinton went on to win the popular vote in the Presidential Election of 2016, she failed to secure enough electoral votes in key battleground states to secure a victory.  Assignment:  In a minimum of one (1) well-developed paragraph, address the following question: Do you think Hillary Clinton could have won the 2016 Presidential Election if she had been a man? Why or why not? NOTE: I am not asking you to agree with Clinton’s politics, or even have favorable view of her.  I’m asking you to consider if a male Democratic candidate with Hillary Clinton’s exact experience and political views could have been more easily elected.  Work Cited: Beinart, Peter. “Fear of a Female President,” The Atlantic, October 2016 issue.  Rubric Module Reflection Rubric Module Reflection Rubric Criteria Ratings Pts This criterion is linked to a Learning Outcome Description of criterion Student has fully addressed the reflection question(s), provided support for their response if requested, and has met the length requirement. 20.0 pts Full Marks Student has fully addressed the reflection question(s) in at least the minimum length required. 15.0 pts Mostly Addressed Student has mostly addressed the reflection question(s) in the minimum length required 10.0 pts Somewhat Addressed Student has responded to part of the reflection prompt but has not responded to all components. 20.0 pts This criterion is linked to a Learning Outcome Historical Context Student has grounded their response in appropriate historical context (time period, decade, part of century, etc.) 5.0 pts Full Marks Student has grounded response in historical context. 0.0 pts No Marks Student has not grounded response in historical context; student has grounded response in historical context that is inaccurate or too broad. 5.0 pts Total Points: 25.0
