Outline: Full working outline including speech title, specific purpose, thesis statement/central idea and bibliography (works cited/MLA or references/APA) required. See pages 98-105 of your book for an example of body style. NOTE: Follow the assignment guidelines for the introduction and conclusion (write them in PARAGRAPH format, do NOT number each sentence). Visual aids: Optional Speech time: 5-7 minutes REQUIRED ELEMENTS: Speech Title: Titling your speech is an aid to help you focus. You may be as straight-forward or creative as you choose. Specific Purpose: [general purpose] + [audience] + [objective] Central Idea: [objective] + [all main points, in the order you will present them] (Like a thesis sentence for written composition.) INTRODUCTION (Written in paragraph format. You may parenthesize each after its respective element if that is helpful to you.) 1. Attention-Getter 2. Audience Relevance 3. Credibility Material (Include direct reference to your research, in addition to any personal knowledge and/or experience you may have) 4. Preview Statement (Include ALL of your main points, in the order you will present them.) BODY Organize your speech in a manner that’s appropriate for your topic. The body must contain points and subpoints; sub-subpoints are highly recommended. Use a system of symbols and indentation, with ONE FULL sentence per symbol (see the sample outline on pages 320-325 of your text). CONCLUSION 1. Summary statement (Summarize or restate main points in a single, concise sentence. You may elaborate on them after the summary statement if you feel it is necessary to do so.) 2. Closing statement: Provide a solid ending: What is the most important idea/concept you want your audience to remember? Consider using a meaningful statement, story or quote to get that point across. BIBLIOGRAPHY (MLA or APA style) A MINIMUM of three (3) correctly formatted, credible sources are required; five (5) credible sources needed for full points.
