Description

1.At the end of part two, Tisserand gives the knife with which he was supposed to kill the happy couple on the beach back to the narrator, saying “…blood changes nothing.” What values does he unequivocally reject here? (To answer the question, check the meaning of “incel” on Google) 2.At the end of chapter one, the narrator refers to Maximilien Robespierre and his execution in 1794 by saying “Maximilien Robespierre, I love you.” You might google “Robespierre” for more info ( if you are intellectually curious) but suffice to say that the man was one of the leaders of the French Revolution of 1789, executed (guillotined face up!) by his own comrades for going too far in his demands for total social and economic equality, but as a result of his policies France abolished slavery in its African colonies). Why then does the narrator “love” him? Also remember that a lot of narrator’s comments are self-mocking. 3.After the narrator is officially declared as “depressed,” he feels that from then on, there will be “an invisible wall” between him and society and that he will “no longer exist” and be considered “as an equal.”( chapter3, page 135). Does he, in your view, wallow in self pity or is he justifiably critiquing the stigmatization of mental disorders by society? 4.What, in your view, are the factors contributing to the narrator’s friend’s (the priest, Jean-Pierre Buvet) crisis of faith? There are two! (chapter 4). 5.When hospitalized in a mental institution, the narrator develops empathy for his “companions in misery” i.e. the other patients. Is his feeling for them genuine? (read carefully the last two pages of chapter 5). 6.At the end of the novel, the narrator makes an important self-discovery as  he contrasts the tranquil beauty of the country forest and his own anguish. What exactly does he find out about himself and his life? ( read the novel’s last paragraph)
