Final project, Curate an exhibition

Description

Getting started, general instructions for final project: curate an exhibition. You will have to select 5-6 artworks (minimum) of Latin American artists from the exhibitions below to curate your own show based on a topic that interests you. You will have to write a curatorial statement, explaining the theme/topic of the exhibition, why you are bringing these artists and works together, why it is important, as well as individual labels for the artworks. These labels combine basic information and a short explanation about the importance of this work (or what you want your viewers to know about this artwork, how it links to the topic and formal characteristics that are relevant to this connection, for example). You will find the webpages to the exhibitions from where to select artworks here (and in the document attached too): A.—“Popular Painters and Other Visionaries,” at El Museo del Barrio (completely online show, it is on view only until Nov. 20, 2020) https://popularpainters-elmuseo.org/ B.—“Vida Americana,” at the Whitney Museum. The artworks can be seen online, but the Whitney Museum opens Sept.  Link: https://whitney.org/exhibitions/vida-americana?section=1&subsection=1#exhibition-artworks C.– Taller Boricua, will open at the Museo del Barrio starting Sept. 12 (cannot be seen online) D.- From the online exhibition “Art at a time like this,” you can also select an artist from the list below: Joiri Minaya, https://artatatimelikethis.com/building-a-better-monument/joiri-minaya Didier William, https://artatatimelikethis.com/building-a-better-monument/didier-william Yvette Molina, https://artatatimelikethis.com/building-a-better-monument/yvette-molina Thiago Martins de Melo, https://artatatimelikethis.com/thiago-martins-de-melo Rosana Paulino, https://artatatimelikethis.com/rosana-paulino E.—“Climate in crisis” at the Brooklyn Museum (choose only artworks related to Mesoamerica or South America) https://www.brooklynmuseum.org/exhibitions/climate_in_crisis F.—“Arte del mar: Artistic Exchange in the Caribbean,” Metropolitan Museum of Art, https://www.metmuseum.org/exhibitions/listings/2019/arte-del-mar-caribbean   You can chose artworks by Latin American artists from any of these art exhibitions, for instance, one artist from A, another from B, two from D, one from F. You can also complement with artworks seen in class or found in the smarthistory.org pages concerning Latin American art. About your exhibition: This is not a solo show of a single artist. It is a thematic show
