Description
Select a media text that reflects “popular” media criticism (I choose the movie Precious as the popular media text, so just find criticism/film response of it and analyze this criticism, you can search on New York Times, Youtube…), i.e. a popular critique of media representation, a critique of “biased” media, or a critique of a corporate media statement on a political issue. Write an 8-10 page critical media analysis of the text using at least two of the approaches (I choose Ideology and Audience-focus as the two approaches: The concept of ideology is very old and influential in media studies. It comes from a recognition that economic and political power is often expressed in supposedly “neutral” forms of entertainment. Your readings this week will review this history and introduce you to the practice of ideological analysis; Audience analysis examines how media consumers use the texts they encounter. As opposed to other approaches that may see audiences as passive receivers of meaning, audience analysis approaches help us understand how users make their own meaning out of media conceived as raw material rather than complete products.) !! Audience-focus mainly analyzes the comments under this Criticism/Film response. Conclude with a prediction about the direction of such forms of popular media criticism in the future. Quote and cite at least four readings from the class as well as outside research. Include a properly formatted Works Cited and use MLA in-text citations.
