WDA: Secondary Sources: This is your first exposure to secondary sources. Secondary sources are any source that discusses a primary source. The primary source for this week will be Rodriguez’s “Achievement of Desire” essay. The secondary source is Adler’s article. Adler’s piece can be considered controversial, so be sure to read the reading guide before starting this assignment. For this assignment, you just answer the following two questions: Describe how Adler’s article is a secondary source by discussing what Adler specifically critiques from Rodriguez’s essay. With the idea of how culture could effect educational experience in mind, how does Adler’s perspective differ from Rodriguez’s? Be sure to not consider the author as the primary source. In other words, Rodriguez is not the primary source; the primary source is his essay, “Achievement of Desire.” Secondary sources are commentary, analysis, or interpretation of primary sources. Here are some examples: Documentaries Commentaries Critical Articles Interpretation Articles Book Reviews In this unit, we will be using Susan Seidler Adner’s commentary article, “Hunger of Memory: The Education of Richard Rodriguez” as the secondary source.  Susan Seidler Adler’s article, “Hunger of Memory,” is a review and critique of Richard Rodriguez’s book, Hunger of Memory: The Education of Richard Rodriguez. You read a chapter of this book called, “The Achievement of Desire.” The review comes from a neoconservative website and may contain opinions that are controversial to you. This article is considered a secondary source to Rodriguez’s essay, “The Achievement of Desire” because it discusses Rodriguez’s essay. Answering questions for this secondary source will help you use this source for your next essay. For the response assignment, you will discuss the contents of the article and how they resonate with you.
