Description

Scenario: You arrived as the Platoon Leader for the Maintenance Platoon/Battalion Maintenance Office in a Forward Support Company supporting an Infantry Battalion 30 days ago. Your initial assessment is that the team is doing a generally good job of managing tasks, but your Platoon Sergeant/Motor Sergeant recently voiced serious concerns with the daily performance of the platoon and several subordinate leaders, as well as your Maintenance Warrant Officer. You’ve taken the next 30 days to assess your NCO’s personnel and training concerns, and are finding discrepancies. During this 60 day period, you’ve also identified significant areas for improvement in PT, marksmanship, and technical proficiency. Of note, your Maintenance Warrant Officer doesn’t attend unit PT and also fails Ht/Wt. Yesterday, you also came across your NCO arguing with a SFC from the BN S4. Today, you socialized your concerns with your CO CDR and s/he is willing to support whatever plan you’d like to implement (within reason). Your CDR is awaiting your feedback.

Task:

1) Provide a prioritized list of problems you need to solve.

2) In bullet format, use Kotter’s 8 step Model of Change and your leadership philosophy to describe your approach to address each problem (hint: Use Kotter’s model as the vehicle to implement your philosophy). Link to the model is below. Feel free to use additional resources, however, this is a completely individual assignment.
