Reflection Paper on Buddhist Philosophy
1) After reading the chapter on Buddhism from Introductory Lectures on Religious Philosophy, identify three aspects of Buddhist philosophy that you think are necessary to living a meaningful life. Why are these important? Give examples. What will happen if these aspects are not incorporated into a person’s life? Give examples.
2) Pick out three different ways that the interview with John Butler exemplifies the ideas presented in Introductory Lectures on Religious Philosophy. Give examples not only from the things that he says, but also the way that he speaks and carries himself. What causes a man to speak and carry himself like this? Do you find the video interesting or boring?
3) How does the story of the Buddha relate to our own individual lives? What is the importance of the story of the Buddha?
4) According to Buddhism, what is the nature of desire? Why, according to Buddhism, does desire lead to suffering? Can this be avoided?
5) How can the ideas of Buddhism be applied to more normal questions, such as: How should we approach marriage and personal relationships? How should we treat and think about our parents? What kind of job should we look for? How should we understand pain and negative experiences?
