Using both primary and secondary research you will seek to understand the impact your topic has on a particular group in society. The essay will incorporate credible sources to support your claim. Analysis will be your way of making connections between your claim and the sources. You will also want to consider what rhetorical appeal or appeals best serve the rhetorical situation. You are permitted to pull information from previous essays, but you cannot simply copy and paste them in the essay. Find ways to rework some of the discussions you have already developed. Pose a research question that will allow you to explore your topic within a broader scope and that makes a connection to a particular group of people. Identify search terms to assist with collecting credible sources that will offer you multiple perspectives. Read sources carefully and critically; examine your primary source and use to help support your claim. Consider what type of argument best suits the topic, research question, and the intended audience. (Refer to p. 529 for the lists of types of argument. You will then refer to that specific chapter for information on how to approach that type of writing.) Review Part Four Research and Arguments in your textbook and the additional resources in the unit folder. At least 1,750-2,250 words of discussion typed in the format required by your major At least 5-7 sources reinforcing or complicating your thesis 2+academic sources; 2+ popular; at least one primary source (you can use data already collected). Include a clear claim and clearly developed argument. Include the elements of an essay: introduction, body, and conclusion to structure the essay. Demonstrate your ability to use grammar, punctuation, and formatting suitable for college. Include any transcripts or survey questions used to collect primary data.
