Description
GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS Choosing the Career To begin the project, first pick a career in criminal justice you are most likely to pursue (JUVENILE PROBATION OFFICER). Note that it can be a related field – for example, social work – and doesn’t have to be part of the criminal justice system itself. It simply needs to be a career that is in some way related to crime and the criminal justice system. Developing a Research Question Second, develop a research question that relates to an issue in the work done in that field. A research question is a question that can be answered through conducting scientific research. It is not a normative question that asks what “should” or “shouldn’t be”; instead it asks about what is occurring and why. Here, you will ask a question about something in the field you want to know more about. For example, if you plan to pursue a career in policing, you might be interested in examining the effects of community policing strategies, community/police relations in general, officer discretion, racialized police violence, or the effects of police body worn cameras. A research question could be: Do police body worn cameras affect the rate of use of force incidents? OR Does increasing police foot patrol affect community trust in police?
