As a result, many of them had tragic endings. One example of an African woman who went through many struggles is Rena. She was hurt by her lover who called off their engagement.  The frustration and disappointment that Rena went through was not her fault; it was because of Tryon’s prejudice against race. During the Reconstruction Period, colored marriages were looked down upon and not accepted by society. Due to this fact, at the end of the novel, Rena ended up dying, symbolizing that Rena could not triumph over her struggles and the system. However, two other African American men Booker T. Washington and Mr. Ryder faced many hurdles in their pursuit of getting an education and career, but they were able to overcome their many struggles and reach their goals. Also, Mrs. Ryder faced the hardship of being separated from her husband for twenty five years. Nonetheless, through her determination and faith in her husband, she finally found him, proving that African Americans may go through many hardships and pain, but they can triumph over their circumstances, and attain their goals and dreams.    VIII.       Conclusion Remember this paragraph should leave a lasting impression on your reader.
