Description
1. Start the essay with a short paragraph. First, state what issue you are writing about, in one or maybe two sentences. Then, introduce the major sociological themes or sociological phenomena and processes you are going to write about as you discuss the issue. In 1–2 sentences, tell us what we are going to learn about the issue you chose and about sociology. 2. For the rest of the essay, address these questions: a) What social phenomena and processes are behind what’s going on, and how does understanding them add to our understanding of the richness of the situation? How does this example illustrate or deepen our understanding of social phenomena processes? b) Based on course material and your ideas, what do you think about it? What do you think should be done? Take the last ½ to 1 page for this. Write for an online blog, an in-depth guest piece for a newspaper or the CBC, or a really long Facebook post. Think of your audience as reasonably informed about current events and society, but with no sociology background. You should define the sociological concepts/phenomena/ processes you discuss, and explain enough about them for people to understand what you’re writing. For instance, if gender is relevant, make sure to explain what it is (and isn’t) so that you can effectively explain its role in your controversy.
