Description
Part 1: Multiple Genres and Audiences First, you will be choosing an argumentative topic that you are interested in. This is a topic that you will convince others (an audience) to believe in. It is important that you choose something you are passionate about because whatever subject you choose will be the same subject you use for the final essay at the end of the class (highly encouraged). Pick something that is argumentative in nature, something that people are still debating about today. Make your topic very specific, enjoyable, and new (For example, marijuana legalization and even abortion is a bit played out in my opinion, but some new perspectives on race/gender class or religion/sexuality/recreation would be interesting. You can even choose something close to your major that you may use later in another class. Avoid topics based in racism, homophobia, transphobia, anti-religious/cultural, etc.; these topics will not be accepted. Second, after choosing your topic, write about the topic as if you were in three different writing situations: Write an email to the manager/boss of a company you work for. In a process way of writing (step by step), convince your boss to incorporate more of your topic in the workplace. For example, if your argumentative topic is “Racial awareness should be taught in all professional settings,” you will write the email just as if it were a real email (with a heading, body, and closing line), and in the email you would talk about steps to management should take to include implement more racial awareness in the workplace, and suggest which steps for management to take. Audience: manager of business Style: process (step-by-step solutions); 100 words Write a very descriptive bedtime story for a 7-year-old child. Each writing situation is about the same topic you chose as your argumentative topic. Descriptive writing uses a variety of senses and storytelling techniques to “show” the story, not just “tell” it. This should use some of the genre patterns for children’s stories. Obviously, your language will change, but the subject stays the same. For example, if we are continuing with the “more racial awareness” example from above, you could write a child’s narrative about race or racial pride. Audience: 7-year-old child Style: Very descriptive (visual and sensory detail); 100 words Write a long, illustrative letter to your good friend. Think of this as a long, personal letter to a friend you don’t see every day but who you are very close to. Illustrative story makes a point by using examples to prove that point (illustrating the point). Similar to argumentative, this illustrative note to your friend tries to convince the reader that your points are valid. From running example about “racial awareness,” you can explain to your friend an event that occurred to you which had to do with race, or which changed your perspective on racial, making you more aware of racial climates. Audience: Good friend (who you don’t see daily) Style: Illustrative (using examples to illustrate a point), 100 words Part 2: Reflection (100 words) After you have written within the 3 genres of writing above, reflect on your writing choices by thinking about and writing through the following questions: How did your writing change throughout the 3 writing situations and why? What did each situation require that was specific to the audience receiving the writing? Describe your different writing styles and purposes here. Explain why you chose the overall argument you chose? How did you cater to each writing situation to make your argument’s topic believable to each audience member? How did age, social status, or relationship influence the words you chose when responding to each situation? Describe your writing process. What kind of planning did you do when writing? What steps did you go through? What changes did you make along the way? What challenging decisions (difficult or simple) did you face when thinking about which words to choose for which audience? How did you make those decisions? Which part of the project would you change, add, or take away next time? Turn this all in on one (1) Word document.
