Description

please read the sample responses to the prompt provided above and rewrite( 3 -5 sentences) one of them using the Lessons 1,2 and three power points provided in the attached files. Please also provide your own 2 sentence response to both of the sample response provided and expand on whether you agree or disagree . Prompt: You are a school counselor. One day, an early adolescent is brought into your office by his concerned parents because he has been caught doing things that would be considered against the law. They want to know why these problems may have developed and whether this pattern of problem behavior persists in adulthood. Discuss what can you tell them based on your knowledge of Moffitt’s two types of adolescent offenders to answer their questions?  Sample Response 1 : When having to speak to parents who are concerned about the behavior patterns of their children its important to give them the facts. As a school counselor I would ensure to effectively communicate with the parents that they have nothing to worry about. The reason for these childhood behaviors can be categorized under transitory experimentation. Under transitory experimentation adolescent behaviors generally don’t persist into adulthood. If I were to explain to the parents where this psychology comes from I would bring up the theories developed by Moffitt. According to Moffitt, there exist two models being life-course-persistent offenders and adolescent limited offenders. The first is behavior that may gradually get worse into adulthood the latter is troubling behavior that will not generally last into adulthood. These behaviors and theories are also affected by variables such as the environment and genetic factors. Reference: Lessons 1, 2 and 3 PowerPoints Sample Response 2 : There are two types of adolescent offenders; life-course persistent offenders and adolescent limited offenders. Life course persistent offenders typically demonstrate antisocial behavior before adolescence and are involved in delinquency during adolescence. Many of these cases are males from poor families that perform poorly in schools, having history of aggression as early as the age of 8. They are at a great risk of continuing criminal activity in adulthood. I would tell the parents not to be too harsh when parenting since it can elicit more bad behavior and increase bad parenting. Adolescent limited offenders don’t usually show signs of psychological problems of family pathology. However, they still show more problems than teens who are not at all delinquent, this might include more mental health problems, substance abuse or family problems. This can be a consequence of poor parenting or antisocial peer relations.
