Research Journal

Description

The word ‘journal’ is rooted in the word ‘daily’ (journée means day in French). The core idea therefore in the context of this course is that this is a place where you will assemble your daily (or almost) record of the research (tests, sketches, readings, viewings, listenings, etc.) that you undertake throughout the semester. You can also think of it as a sketchbook. The one key difference from a purely personal journal or sketchbook is that it must be organized and be made presentable—part of your task here involves editing. In other words, you may have an ongoing journal/sketchbook that is in its raw form that provides the bulk of the elements to what you eventually hand in, but the final version should be a selection thereof. The overall format is open, it is recommended that you include an introduction, a table of contents, and a chronological structure—but feel free to diverge if some or all of these do not fit with the format you’ve devised. Needless to say the final submission must be digital (pdf, website, MSWord, etc.). You may include texts, images, videos, sounds. Given the potentially non-linear nature of the journal, it is difficult to pinpoint an amount of content that’s expected. Suffice to say that quality always trumps quantity. Another way to put it is that you should show evidence that you’ve gone beyond the quick google search and wikipedia entry.   The classes without Guest Speakers on October 22 and November 26 will be dedicated primarily to tracking your progress on this assignment and the Solo Research Project.
