(1 resource)   DIFFERENCES ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES CLASSROOM ASSESSMENT STRATEGIES “Allow the teacher to obtain more specific information about each student’s knowledge and skills relative to the instructional objectives of the class” (Wortham & Hardin, 2015). Focuses on each individual child. Easier to determine each child’s strengths and weaknesses which supports teachers in being able to adapt lesson plans to fit the learning style of each child.    Professionals can adapt assessment strategies in the classroom to reach educational objectives.  Misuse of assessment strategies in the classroom – such as: When educational objectives are added reliability of the assessment may be questioned. Teacher biases of children and or families may be incorporated into assessment strategies. STANDARDIZED ASSESSMENTS Used in the classroom to “evaluate achievement in comparison with a simple group of children and to measure a child’s achievement on specific test criteria” (Wortham & Hardin, 2015). Compares a group of children in an age bracket.  Advantages to standardized assessments are: “Standardized testing helps schools close achievement gaps. Standardized testing is paired with standards to ensure mastery of grade-appropriate material Standardized tests objectively compare student skill levels across schools” (Success Stories, 2016). These types of assessments do not assess higher-level thinking – there is no room to individualize these types of assessments. Scores may possibly be impacted by environmental factors. #2 RESPOND TO THIS DISCUSSION RESPONSE AND PROVIDE A RESOURCE      1/2 page                                                              Good points, educator…….According to ISSA (2010), The educator assesses the level of children’s involvement necessary for meaningful learning and participation and adjusts in activities accordingly. In comparison to Samantha, by using the checklist, I am looking for specific actions that will indicate to me and others that Sara is or is not making improvements in the area of social and emotional development. Once this has been noted and observed then needed adjustments can be made to get Sara where she needs to be in order to strive and reach her goals. Then, the educator ensures that the assessment process considers and builds upon children’s strengths, individual needs, and interests. By allowing Sara the option of where she wants to play and using the checklist, I am considering what Sara might be interested in while still trying to improve her social and emotional development skills.
