This is a persuasive essay!!! You will need to give a brief overview of this topic before you persuade your reader (and audience for your oral presentation) that this matter demands our attention, and that you have an alternative or solution to address this problem.  To this end, you will be relying on ethos, primarily borrowed and invented.  Select your sources cautiously since your argument in part depends on their credibility; using suspect or weak material (for instance, obviously biased sources) will undermine your position.  As you cannot use yourself as a source, situated ethos is not likely to apply to this essay.  Try to include material that is current and reliable.  You may use whatever type of sources you feel are most appropriate in your discussion:  journal or magazine articles, newspaper articles, web sites, documentaries, interviews, books, encyclopedias.  If you limit your research to just a couple of websites, your argument may lack authority (detail, substance, support) and, therefore, persuasiveness.    Invented ethos is created by the clear, concise, and correct presentation of your ideas and your research.  In constructing your paper, you will want to move logically from one point to another, avoiding gaps or logical fallacies.  In explaining the significance of the subject, you might note how the issue affects us (or others), why the cause should be supported, or what problems might appear in the future if a problem is not remedied.  In providing relevant background on your topic, be selective so that you reserve most of the essay for establishing the strength of your views.  If you are looking at an issue that provokes responses other than your own, it would be worthwhile to acknowledge them early in the essay:  recognizing opposing viewpoints shows that you are informed on the topic and allows you to directly dispel contradictory opinions.    Take care to document meticulously any information that you gather from sources.  Even in the preliminary stages of note-taking, record all necessary bibliographic data.  As well, clarify what material you are taking directly from a source and what you are paraphrasing or summarizing:  ALL borrowed information, including another’s ideas, MUST be documented correctly.   Failure to acknowledge a direct quotation, or a summary or paraphrase, constitutes plagiarism, and the result will be a failing grade on the assignment.  You must cite sources both in the essay (parenthetically) and at the end of the paper (in a References list); APA style of documentation is required for this essay, and we will go over this style in advance of the paper’s due date.
