How Was the 2020 Presidential Election a Repudiation of “Illiberal Democracy”?

Government Research Paper Fareed Zakaria, once the editor of “Foreign Affairs” and the current host of “GPS” on CNN explains the concept of illiberal democracy in his book “The Future of Freedom: Illiberal Democracy at Home and Abroad.” Liberty and democracy may go together in the West, he says, but they are not necessarily connected. Indeed, the curtailment of liberties may be popular and have the support of the majority of voters. He argues that, “democracy is flourishing; liberty is not.” This brings to mind the 19th-century liberal fear of a tyrannical majority and the subsequent intellectual effort to cordon individual freedom from majority opinion and decision-making. Democracy is fragile, its self-regulating mechanism is often sluggish, and it is highly vulnerable to breakdown during the lag between repressive action and an effective critical response. Zakaria argues that Russia is democratic but also illiberal, pointing to Vladimir Putin’s “superpresidency” and restrictions on the media. President Trump cannot actually be characterized as a Republican.  He is a populist leader who more accurately characterizes an adherence to illiberal Democracy. His policies were reversals of liberal, Enlightenment ideals that formed the basis of the representative democracy that governs the United States. ·      First, what are those Enlightenment or Age of Reason ideals that are the basis of US government? ·      Second, what is, according to Fareed Zakaria, an “Illiberal Democracy”? ·      Third, what has been happening in the United States with the Trump Administration that suggests the US was moving toward Illiberal Democracy? ·      Why are some Republicans refusing to acknowledge that Trump lost his bid for reelection?  Why is it important that former Republican president George W.
