Cultural Competency

Description

Interview a professional who works for culturally diverse families (ethnically diverse or families from different countries). Examples where you can find them are: child care centers, schools.  Ask the following questions: Describe your work and responsibilities. How did you start in your work? Describe the families that you work for. What are their cultural backgrounds? Do you find their backgrounds similar or different than yours? What do you find rewarding in working for culturally diverse families? What example/s can you cite? What do you find challenging in working for culturally diverse families? What example/s can you cite? How do you face the challenges? What helped you in responding to these challenges? How do you prepare yourself so that you are effective in your work with culturally diverse families? What will you suggest to people who are interested to work with or for culturally diverse families and individuals?         3-4 page write-up paper. The paper will include the following: Appropriate structure and APA style: Use double-spacing, Times New Roman font in 12 pt. An Introductory Paragraph Use one or more paragraphs per question Connect the Interview to Readings/course discussions Concluding Paragraph using your own voice to reflect upon this experience A complete and comprehensive summary of the responses from the interview with an introduction of the interviewee (name of interviewee may be left out for confidentiality). A summary is NOT a transcript of what went on during the interview. Use your own words to explain the answers of your interviewee to the questions you asked. An explanation of what cultural competency of professionals looks like when working with the particular culturally diverse families that the interviewee works for. Students will apply at least 3 key concepts (highlighted in yellow) from the articles you are required to read in this module and integrate them with the interviewee’s responses. When you integrate, do not mention the concepts but explain what the concept is all about and how it fits in with the interviewee’s responses. Required articles   Kalyanpur, M. (1998).
