Those two specific theories will be selected from the following forced choice: 1) One specific, contemporary FPA theory/theorist: use Chapter 10 and the Hudson article to help you identify one actor-specific FPA theory approach/theorist(s) within the following categories: Bureaucratic Politics & Structures; Organizational Processes: small group decision-making Cognitive Processes & Psychology, including Groupthink and cognitive constraints on rationality; meaning & framing (e.g., faulty analogies/metaphors, representation entrepreneurs, etc.); Leader Assessment Frameworks; Neuroscience, Emotion, and Embodiment; Prospect theory (risk-taking & loss-aversion); Poliheuristic Theory of Decision-Making. “Multilevel, Multidimensional”: Hudson’s (2005 or 2020) integrative, multi-level approach Constructivist Turn in FPA: beliefs and identities before interests – social learning/National Role Conception, Horizon/Template Analysis, Influence of Societal Groups/media/institutional frameworks (Be careful to differentiate from more general constructivist approaches to IR theory) 2) One specific theory/theorist taken from critical, neomarxist, post-structuralist, postcolonial, non-Western, or gendered IR theories. Primary Sources: media and newspapers, government reports, UN documents, World Bank or IO/NGO statistics, etc. Aim for a minimum of two cited primary sources to provide factual background to your phenomena/topic/cases. Secondary Sources: Any analysis (why/how) includes scholarly journals or books (peer reviewed), but know the difference between peer-reviewed versus not. Lots of good think tank/policy analysis which is not peer reviewed but still done by experts (e.g. Foreign Policy: www.foreignpolicy.com) Aim for a minimum of two cited secondary sources to provide analytical/theoretical background to your phenomena/topic/cases. At least one needs to be a peer reviewed journal article.  RESEARCH (6 points): Includes A. Used the article(s) provided plus the textbook effectively, and found an additional (minimum) of two primary sources (facts/data) and two secondary, analytical sources (at least one of which has to be a peer reviewed journal article. B. Appropriate and consistent use of citations, including a mix of indirect paraphrasing and direct quotes, including page numbers in most cases (where applicable). C. Well formatted reference list in proper alphabetical order by either last name or organization (if no author listed). EXECUTION (5 points): Style and presentation (i.e., overall level of attention to detail, including clarity, grammar, punctuation, formality, typos, capitalization, etc.). Maximum 6 double-spaced pages (plus title page & reference list) STRUCTURE (3 points): Great title (and complete information on cover page), comprehensive introductory paragraph, and logical structure. THINKING (11 points): Clearly illustrated knowledge of (1) facts of the case and (2) addressed the RQ clearly from two different theoretical perspectives. In the process you will illustrate your understanding of the core fundamental assumptions of the specific theory and be able to differentiate those from others, and evaluate which theory is more insightful or, perhaps, the two theories are complementary, highlighting different elements of the same event or phenomenon. This time around, you might just end up with radically different conclusions, and, for post-positivist or alternative approaches, less an answer to the RQ than a discourse analysis or deconstruction.
