Description
Students are asked to select a single artifact (sculpture, painting, or architecture), from one of the ancient/medieval cultures under examination this term (refer to the table of contents in the textbook for a listing of these cultures), and to write a paper demonstrating what they have learned regarding how this artifact best reflects one of the key social, religious, political, etc. aspects of that culture. You are to address properties of style and iconography with regard to the above, showing how the appearance of the object, and its meaning are a direct reflection of the aspect you have chosen to examine of the culture that produced it. Each paper must include an image or images of the artifact being discussed. Images must not be included in the body of the paper; the proper place for these is at the end of the paper. Please make sure the image is fully captioned Each paper must have information indicating where this object is currently located (Museum, historic site, etc.). Students should employ a reasonable number of source materials (books, journal articles, internet sites), and every effort must be made to properly cite all source material. Please see the addendum to this document on sources for further information. Students must make absolutely sure that the paper is free from any plagiarism. The Safe Assign program is used for the submission of this paper. This paper requires a works cited page which should appear at the end of the paper. While the project demands a certain level of research, the ultimate goal here is to have the student use what has been learned through this research to arrive at conclusions of their own concerning the way the artifact serves to indicate its meaning and function within the society that produced it. The paper should be approximately 4-5 pages long. The font must be no lager than size 12, and double-spacing of your text is required.
