Your major writing project for the course is an essay that asks you to demonstrate some of what you have learned about interpersonal communication to a specific situation you have encountered over the semester. Specifically, you will select an interpersonal situation you would like to analyze. A situation could be found in an advertisement, a film or TV show, a space, a song, an object (such as a painting), or a website. You will write a 6-8 page paper with at least 5 (academic) sources in which you analyze what the situation can tell us about interpersonal communication. One of these sources should be your textbook. This essay should follow the form of an academic essay and contain a thesis, clear organization, and correct MLA citations. Minimally, you should address the following: 1) What is the interpersonal situation? 2) What are 3-5 theories, concepts, and/or topics concerning interpersonal relationships or communication that can help us understand the situation or relationship better? 3) What are the implications of what you have discovered? In other words, why is it important to consider? Is it beneficial to our society? Writing and Research Requirements: This essay should be double-spaced, use 1 in. margins, and 12 point font. You should use 5 sources of academic quality. One of these sources should be the textbook and the situation you are analyzing does NOT count as a source. Wikipedia, answers.com, etc., do not count as sources. Each source you use must be incorporated into your text via in-text citations in addition to on your works cited page. Failure to properly cite information implies that you have ownership over the information instead of the author—this can be construed as plagiarism.
